Maybe It’s You

Cross stitch pattern for hand embroidery

I hardly even need to tell the story on this one, do I. People are hard. Working with people is even harder. Sometimes, you just have to say it. Other times, you just wish you did.

Maybe It’s You is 64 stitches wide by 61 high. It’s a very clear, simple message, so it’s set against the bias, or on the diagonal, for added punch. It can be stitched using any combination of fabric and flosses, but I suspect the more contrast you have for this project, the better you’ll like the result.

This could also be a prime candidate for a t-shirt and some waste canvas!

P.S. Making text on a diagonal is TOUGH. 🙂

You can click on the image to take you to the place where you can grab a PDF copy of this chart for your own, or you can use this one: http://metaphorpublications.com/wp/gcxsd-introducing-grimalkin-crossing-cross-stitch-designs/gcxsd-maybe-its-you/.

Introducing: the Belle Monde Alphabet

I got so excited about this yesterday that I released it into our Grimalkin Crossing group on fb  without posting about it here, first. In my defense, I was hella tired — my body is still not over the time change — and I did/do think this one is kinda squee-worthy.

Without further ado, meet Belle Monde:

A font from a sadder, madder world.

I interrupted work on the rest of the letters in the font for “Die Mad About It” to start and finish this one. I’ve been imagining certain letters for a couple of weeks now, and got inspired to get it the fuck done already after a rewatch of the first season of Penny Dreadful. I’ve planned a sampler series from that series that needs this alphabet in the world, and I hope to drop the first in that series later today, so I can go back to The Big Damn Art Nouveau Alphabet (TBDAN, don’t make me type it all out every time). I’ve gotten through “K” on that project, for those of you who’ve been waiting.

If you’d like a copy of the Belle Monde Alphabet for your personal use, I’m asking $4.25 for a PDF copy.  Let me know in the comments, and we’ll figure out how to take it someplace more private to discuss the details. 😉

Die Mad About It, the beta release

Maybe this is overdue — but I hope it’s worth waiting for.

Inspired by a tweet by Melanie Dione (@beauty_jackson), “Die Mad About It” became the viral battle cry for every woman who is fed up with having to explain or excuse the fact that she uses contraception for any reason, but mainly because liking sex doesn’t equal liking pregnancy and/or babies anymore, if it ever did. Honestly, though I’ve loved every needleworked version of this that I’ve seen so far, I couldn’t resist going for something big. I just felt that if you’re going say this to someone, you really ought to mean it.

It’s the kind of statement you really want commit to, and you want to enunciate it clearly, like a fucking lady.

In flaming red and gold, too. Design area =232w x 107h

Hell Bats! [blog post]

I wanted to design something seasonal. And small — ornament sized, no bigger, even on 14 count aida. And then I found a vintage design in one of the pattern archives that inspired me because, IMO bats don’t get nearly the love they deserve.

The PDF of this was to have been in your greedy virtual hands last week — but the digital fates are fickler than most, and so here we are. I’m just entirely grateful that my partner/husband/co-conspirator understands the nitty-gritty, nuts-and-bolts of these things to be able to master them when they try to go feral on me.

This is Hell Bats! It’s about 3″ square, and it will be more like 3.25″ square when I back stitch the border around it (it’s becoming a biscornu as soon as I get the other side stitched).

Introducing Hell Bats! an original design from Grimalkin Crossing.

Hell Bats! is available via PDF from me directly, as is its first variation, inspired by my favorite fairy tale villain. Hell Bats for Maleficent. What you see below is a modified version of a screen shot from my work station, not the actual chart itself. If you’d like a screen shot of what the chart looks like in PDF form, feel free to message me on FB or at the email I’m listing below. I’ll be happy to send one along so you can judge the quality for yourself. ❤

Individually, these PDFs are priced at $3.25 for either. But! to celebrate — the return of fall, the return of the rains that doused the wildfires, my ability to finish these designs, and the clearing of this project from my stack — for a limited time — through November 1st — I’d like to offer BOTH for the sale price of $5.25.

To purchase, please send an email to me at the following address, correcting all the fuckery to outwit bots, &c: aematson ([at]) metaphorpublications ([dot]) com.

An Original Finish: Clitarita!

I feel pretty proud to introduce a preview of this design here at Grimalkin Crossing: Clitarita, a counted cross stitch project stitched on 28 count black monaco, using two strands of DMC cotton floss “over two.” This is fresh off the hoop, I haven’t soaked it yet to plump up any of the fibers — but that coverage is already f’n fabulous.

Design and Copyright by Alesia Matson 2017

Clitarita was inspired by the magnificent, magical, infinitely perfect design of the human clitoris, and by my love of Art Nouveau colors and curves.

I designed it because I need a new bag in which to keep my favorite deck of tarot cards + book, and because I want to make it myself. It was pretty important for the new bag to feature something I’d stitched, but the more I looked at designs that I thought might be appropriate, the more I realized that I really just wanted to stitch a clit.

A pretty clit.

So, here we are. The world could do with 100 more pretty clit designs for counted cross stitch, so like, now there’s only 99 to go.

The story behind the name is as follows: The WTFYW Cross Stitch fb group has had stitch-alongs (SAL) every month this year, and we’ve featured themes for beverages (alcoholic and otherwise), and for the sexy bits of the human body, and in a group chat I sort of recklessly (well, actually drunkenly) promised something along the lines of a mojito backed up by a vagina — Vagito — and I never could get anything right that I liked.

Then there was that depressive relapse, and I lost interest in just about everything, again. Anyway, when my current tarot card bag began to unravel at the bottom seam and I needed a new design for it, I spent about a week getting this down on paper, then reached for colors that were meaningful to me.

  • The pink is not only because some of my favorite clits are pink, but also because I made peace in my decades-long war with the color pink just generally, and wanted to commemorate that I got my power back out of it.
  • The blue is for a pair of eyes I will never see in this life, and…
  • the green is kind of margarita green so I can touch back to Vagito, anyway.

So, there you have it. Now I have to solve the ever-looming, long-delayed software issue at my workstation, because I MISS DESIGNING these things and I don’t intend to be thwarted on this any longer!

Thanks for reading along. If you are interested in stitching a version of Clitarita for yourself, stay tuned. It’s coming!

Okay, so I did a thing. I owe the idea and the font for this from one Nicole Iaquinto, of my subversive stitchy-sisters on Facebook. The rest I pretty much worked out on my own using skull sweat and StitchFiddle.com.

BIG IMPORTANT UPDATE: This is where the original idea for this project originated: https://www.etsy.com/listing/487007120/a-womans-place-is-in-the-rebellion-pdf  The stitcher-artists’ name is Jenna Palmieri. I’m so sorry I couldn’t find this info before I did the post, but I’m super-happy to include it now. 🙂

In honor of Carrie Fisher, who is and always Princess Leia and General Organa. And dedicated to all those Princess Generals who are in our lives, every day. ❤

My gift to the fabulous community of cross stitchers for 2017

Clicking on the image should take you to the media page and the full-size PNG.

I also made a PDF available, hopefully, by clicking this link.

It is not awesome, and I apologize for that. I’ll be replacing it with a better version when I get some software that will run on my Ubuntu 14.04 setup.

I have left room for a little customization at the bottom on either side. Light sabers would hella cool, for instance. 🙂

I’ll be stitching up the first model for it here shortly. If you beat me to finishing a version, let me know?

It’s a day to be officially subversive. See this link for the Women & Allies Nationwide Day of Protest‘s FB page for more information, if you’re curious. I do have to run an errand into town later to pick up free flat rate postage boxes, but I’m resolved to spend no money and do no banking today. It was impossible to arrange for fall-back care for my MiL (that’s going to be a recurring theme, btw) so I could go to a march, but that doesn’t stop me from taking out my subversive impulses on a good cross stitch design.

I found this bit of unintentionally smutty, intentionally hilarious cross stitch memorabilia in storage this weekend. I’m finally passing on the boxes of vintage 80’s charts to someone who is willing to pay postage to have them, and that’s a very good thing. While I was there, I pulled the plastic bin of personal stash I’d been keeping there to bring home, and look what was right near the top: charts for the Country English Posture Alphabet from 1782!

via Grimalkin Crossing

“or, the Alphabet turn’d Posture-master”

It could only have been smuttier had they been naked.

Here’s the introduction and a bit of context from the inside of this oversized, folded-in-quarters chipboard chart:

The woman who had it before me had taken scissors to it and trimmed off the margins except for one, where she 3-hole punched it for binding. And on the back, we learn that there were RHYMES for each letter that were published with the original lithograph. They’re unbelievably bawdy to modern eyes. Here’s one I whipped together last night, just to scratch my itch over it:

via Grimalkin Crossing, pleasing every sex since...?

Swear to gawd, that’s exactly what the rhyme says.

So today, as my act of subversion, I’m putting together such festive sayings as “RESIST” “GET FUCKED” and “GO FUCK YOURSELF” and getting prepared to enjoy some hilarity while I do.

If Pam Neely is still alive and you know her or of her, please convey my utmost regards. This is cracking my shit right up and the possibilities here are practically endless.
